Columbus - A couple of varsity wrestlers from Washington County were crowned champions this past weekend.
On Sunday in the inaugural OHSWCA (Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association) Girls State Wrestling Tournament at Hilliard Davidson High, Warren freshman Hayley Snyder (22-14) became the first female in the entire Buckeye State to claim an individual title when she decisioned Elyria’s Riley Banyas, 8-1.
“Hayley won three matches on her way to her championship with two pins and an 8-1 win in the finals,” said first-year Warren wrestling boss Jeff Parsons.
“She was in the lightest weight class 101 so she was the first girl to win the title.”
More than 250 girls from nearly 100 schools wrestled at the state meet. The tourney isn’t officially sanctioned by OHSAA but representatives are hopeful to make girls wrestling an official varsity sport in the near future.
